Asiatic witchweed (Striga asiatica) is a parasitic plant of corn, sorghum, sugar cane and rice crops. It is a native of Africa and was first detected in North Carolina and South Carolina in 1955.
This plant obtains nutrients directly from the host plant's root system leading to decreased growth and yield.
