Pine wilt nematode (Pinewood)

Bursaphelenchus xylophilus

Pine wilt nematode (Pinewood) (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) is a nematode pest of conifers . It was first detected in Wisconsin in 1984.

The Pine Wilt Nematode needs an insect vector (the Pine Sawyer Beetle) to carry it to new host trees. It enters the tree at the beetles feeding site, multiplies rapidly and clogs the water/resin channels, wilting, then killing the tree.

For more information about this plant pest, see the CABI data sheet.
