Sirex woodwasp

Sirex noctilio

Sirex woodwasp (Sirex noctilio) is an insect pest of pine trees. It is a native of Europe, Asia and North Africa and was first detected in New York in 2004.

Pine trees weaken and die due to the fungus, Amylostereum areolatum, being deposited in the tree when eggs are laid. This is just one of many forest pests that are moved to un-infested forests by humans moving firewood. Help protect our forests: don't move firewood!
