Walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis) is an insect pest of walnut trees. It was first detected in Virginia in 2011.
This woodboring beetle is native to the southwest US and does not kill the native walnuts in that area. As it's range has expanded it is spreading a fungal pathogen, Geosmithia morbida, that causes 1000 cankers disease that kills walnut species including the black walnut. This is just one of many forest pests that are moved to un-infested forests by humans moving firewood. Help protect our forests: don't move firewood!
