Loosestrife root weevil

Hylobius transversovittatus

Loosestrife root weevil (Hylobius transversovittatus) is a beneficial insect of Loosestrife. It was first detected in North America in 1992.

Introduction of purple loosestrife into North America and its spread into wetlands has led to the degradation of these important habitats for wildlife. European studies demonstrated that this root boring weevil is highly host specific to the target weed and might prove successful on providing long term control.
