Ambrosia beetle

Xyleborus spp.

Ambrosia beetle (Xyleborus spp.) is an insect pest of hardwoods and softwoods. It was first detected in Maryland in 2004.

These pests damage dead, weakened trees and seasoning logs by their boring and by the staining from the fungi cultured within the wood for larval food. This is just one of many forest pests that are moved to un-infested forests by humans moving firewood. Help to protect our forests: don't move firewood!
